If you feel like it’s too hot to garden outside right now, you’re not alone. But now is the perfect time to grow microgreens indoors.
Why grow microgreens?
Steps to Growing Microgreens
-
Choose seeds. Lettuce, spinach, arugula, and radish are just some of the great options.
-
Prepare your container. Use a shallow tray or a small pot with drainage holes. Fill it with a good quality potting mix, leaving about an inch of space at the top.
-
Sow the seeds. Sprinkle them evenly over the the potting mix. Feel free to use a lot of seeds as they will be harvested when they are still small.
-
Cover the seeds. Cover lightly with at thin layer of potting mix – enough to cover but not bury them. You can also cover the seeds with a thin layer of vermiculite or perlite.
-
Water gently. Use a spray bottle or a watering can. Be careful not to displace them.
-
Cover & place. Use a lid or plastic wrap to keep moisture in and place in a warm, well-lit location – microgreens need a lot of light to grow.
-
Keep on eye on things! The potting mix should be moist but not soggy. Within a few days you should start to see sprouts. Remove the cover when the seedlings start to push it up.
-
It’s time to harvest and enjoy! Once the microgreens are about an inch or so tall, you can start harvesting them. Use scissors to cut them just above the soil level. Microgreens can be used in salads, sandwiches, and other dishes. Rinse before use and store in the fridge for a few days.
